Visiting the Region

Welcome to the Pyrenees Wine Region in central Victoria, home of award-winning wines and welcoming wineries set in spectacular scenic surrounds. Less than two hours from Melbourne and centred on the small friendly towns of Avoca and Moonambel, it is well removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

A southern extension of the Great Dividing Range, the Pyrenees foothills and ranges create a remarkable diversity of microclimates that provide a wealth of variety for winemakers. The 40+ vineyards in the region grow about 30+ varieties of grapes, but the Pyrenees’ strength and reputation lies in its savoury, spicy reds—in particular, premium Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon—and increasingly in a fine range of wonderful sparkling wines. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc also respond beautifully to the soils and climate here.

Pyrenees winemakers run a number of unique and fun events throughout the year at locations including Melbourne, nearby regional cities and local venues—a perfect opportunity for you to get a taste of what the Pyrenees offers and to whet the appetite for a visit to the region.

When you do, what should you expect? Picture yourself rounding a corner on a quiet country road to discover another vineyard or cellar door amid stunning views. And when you stop to taste a drop or two, there’s a good chance you’ll be talking to the winemaker in person.

There’s nothing quite like it. Come and unearth the Pyrenees for yourself.
